Photography online marketing is changing.

You may or may not have heard the catchphrase “Google Hummingbird Algorithm Update”. This update was launched at the end of September in 2013 and it’s something that all photography business owners should really be familiar with.

What is Google algorithm?

The algorithm is somewhat like a mathematical formula that Google uses to choose the best search results from the millions of websites out there. In short, it determines which website shows up first for a particular search.

Remember, Google wants to offer the best quality search results for their users. So when you are working on your SEO you are actually assisting your website to adhere to the rules of the mathematical formula so you can be seen for the Google searches that you want to show up for.

Ok so now you have an understanding of what the algorithm is, let’s move on to looking at the hummingbird update and what it means for your business.

Hummingbird is simply the name that Google have given to reflect the recent changes made to the mathematical formula.

Google Can Answer Questions
The first major impact you will notice is Google will become increasingly better  at answering “conversational style” search queries, like questions.

Let’s take a look at an example:

Say if you were a bride to be and you were looking for a  wedding photographer in New Jersey…  previously you would need to type in a keyword such as “Wedding Photographer New Jersey”

With the new algorithm updates, you can start to ask Google more specific questions such as “what is the best wedding photographer in New Jersey?” and it will come up with answers based on the sites it feels best answer this question.

Hummingbird loves Mobile Responsiveness
The second major impact you will notice is that Google is paying increasing amounts of attention to mobile sites. With the large number of mobile users, Google is favoring websites that offer better usability.

Now I hate to say it, but if you have to pinch and scroll to look at your site on a mobile device, you’re just not doing it right. Having a mobile friendly site is becoming more and more critical as mobile browsing increases in popularity.
