So by now most of you should be familiar with what keywords or keyword phrases are. But for those of you that don’t know the easiest way to understand is to have a think about what you would type into Google if you were searching for the little green monster to the right….
You’re probably thinking along the lines of “green plush monster” “green plush t-rex” or something like that… every one of those things you thought of is a keyword phrase which is often shortened to just keyword.
Why is keyword research important for your photography SEO?
According to a study conducted by Chikita Network…
94% of users who Google in search of something never make it past the first page and approximately 34% click on search result 1 on the first page. What does this have to do with keyword research? Plenty. If you can’t make it onto page 1 for the keyword your trying for, you can basically bow out of the game.
Freaking out yet? There really is no need to freak out… it’s actually not as hard as you think if you’re a little clued up and you have the right tools.
Introducing: Market Samurai
Some very clever Australians have created a user-friendly keyword research tool called Market Samurai.
Market Samurai is your all-in-one research tool. It will help you:
– Find more keywords in related to your photography services
– Get an estimate on how many visitors you could expect on your website if you were #1 for the keyword you’ve chosen.
– Identify who is currently on page 1 for your keyword
– Show you what you would need to do to be able to knock your competition off page 1
“You don’t have to have the best website to rank on page 1, you just need to be that little bit better than your competitors”
Drastically Reduce Keyword Research Time
The keyword research section is really helpful. Just enter one keyword for example “wedding photography” and by interacting with the Google Keyword Tool, Market Samurai will make suggestions for related keywords. There will be words suggested that you wouldn’t have even thought of so it’s a really good idea to start here.
From there you can deselect all the keywords that aren’t relevant (for example any keyword suggestions that are in cities/states outside your area). This is the most time consuming part of the process, but I was still able to reduce 800 keywords down to 260 in less than 1/2 an hour for one of my Photography Web Coaching clients.
Assess Your Competition
Once you have chosen your keywords, you can then have a look at your competition. For each of the keywords. Market Samurai will show you who you can easily bump off page 1, what you would need to do to achieve that. This is done in the SEO competition tab of Market Samurai.
